Here at the Rusty Spurr Ranch we
hold our horses in the highest regard. |

They play an integral role in virtually every aspect of our business. From

transporting our staff to whatever chore they may be required to complete, our
ranch could not function without strong, healthy horses.

WILD
WEST LIVES HERE
Summit-area western activities
promise good times |
 |
By Robert Allen
Horseback trail rides are a popular activity
offered all summer in Summit and neighboring
counties. The Rusty Spurr Ranch in
Kremmling began offering the Outlaw Ride
in 2008, after it became clear that more
experienced riders were seeking something
a bit more engaging that follow-the-leader
riding. It’s a performance ride,” said
Han Smith, owner of the Rusty Spurr. He
said the ride offers an opportunity to lope
the horses and keep a faster pace.
|
And like the
rest of the local horse-riding businesses,
the Rusty Spurr offers rides for people
of all skill levels. Riders from
beginner to expert can experience a cattle
drive on the ranch’s 10,000 acres
of open range. The drive allows guests
to get to know horses as they take control
of a herd of up to 150 cattle. “People
don’t sign up o come out so we can
show them what great cowboys we are, “ Smith
said. “It’s an iconic
lifestyle – something that a lot
of Americans identify themselves with.” He
said the three-and-a-half to four-hour
ride involves familiarizing people with
their horses as they locate the herd. And
the cattle drives actually benefit the
animals and land. “We have
to keep the cows moving anyway.” He
said, adding that it helps ensure they’re
grazing the ground evenly. The herd
is run on a permit on Bureau of Land Management
land.
The ranch’s Saddle and Paddle package
offers a morning ride and lunch before
folks gear up for a ride with KODI rafting
on the Colorado River.

SADDLE
UP
Get a taste of life in the Old West on a good, old-fashioned cattle drive |
By Ted Shelsby
Special to the Sun
KREMMLING, Colorado // We had been in the saddle
for about an hour when we got our first glimpse
of the object of our search.
|
 |
There, on the horizon, near Bill
Moore Lake with its reflective view of puffy
white clouds and blue sky, was a herd of about
165 cows, including some of the more ornery bulls
seen on the professional rodeo circuit.
We gave our horses free reins and with a kick
of our heels and a shout of "Yeehaw!" we
began our morning's work.
This was a cattle drive.

Summit
County and Breckenridge Colorado Trail Rides
We have
five full time wranglers on staff, and a variety
of part time cowboys and cowgirls who have a long
history of experience with cattle, horses and ranching.
We offer a variety of unique experiences to accommodate
any equine desires our guests might have, from
two and three hour scenic Colorado horseback rides
through the mountain forests, scenic vistas and
over the range, to genuine cattle drives, and even
team building exercises for your corporate retreat,
as well as an optional western lunch. As an example,
our “Saddle & Paddle” will help
you maximize your vacation time by merging the
best of the Colorado horseback rides with that
of whitewater rafting. This adventure package gives
you the chance to spend a beautiful morning riding
our horses on the trail, followed by an afternoon
with our friends from KODI
Rafting as you wash the dust of the trail off
while rafting a beautiful stretch of the famous Colorado
River.
Rusty Spurr
ranch is a short, beautiful drive away from
Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon, Breckenridge,
Vail, and Winter Park; close enough to be convenient,
yet far enough from the crowded towns that
you can have a true western ranching experience
in a single day. |

Rusty Spurr’s cowboys and cowgirls love to take people out on our undeveloped
and diverse landscape, far from the hotels and highways and busy tourist spots.
Take one of our memorable Colorado trail rides through the silent trails and
breathe the clean mountain air as you and your horse navigate through tranquil
aspen and evergreen forests. Marvel at the unrivaled panoramic mountain views
of the Continental Divide, Never Summer, and Gore ranges. Learn a new skill
or challenge yourself by taking part in one of our authentic Colorado cattle
drives, with friends or the entire family.
Ranch living is more than a summer pastime; for us, it’s a way of life,
and a passion. Our wranglers are all experienced hands at riding horses and
punching cattle, and some of us live on the range year-round. We enjoy spending
time with each guest as we rope and ride, whether we’re helping out with
your riding skills or answering questions, or just getting to know each other.
Colorado horseback rides with the Rusty Spurr Ranch will take you from the
lively stables at Cow Camp to ruins of homesteader cabins out on the range,
plus the chance to spot elk, antelope, deer and other Colorado wildlife. Whether
you are looking for Colorado trail rides, a cattle drive, or a location for
your corporate teambuilding activity, Rusty Spurr ranch has the all the hospitality
and authentic cowboy experience folded into our beautiful 10,000 acre ranch.
Step out of the towns and into the wilds, and allow us the opportunity to extend
our welcome to you and your family.
